The Brazilian Cardinal or Red-Crested Cardinal

Latin Name: Paroaria coronata

Description: These cardinals have a distinguishing red head and face, along with a red upper chest. Their breast region is white and their back is greyish in colour. While both males and females resemble each other, the young juveniles are noted for their brown heads and black beaks. The Brazilian Cardinals reach an approximate size of 7.5 inches in length - not a big bird.

Range: Native to South American lowlands, these cardinals were introduced to the Hawaii region back in the late 1920's. They can be found in semi open areas with tall vegetation. In Hawaii they are frequently found in parks, lawns and bushes.

Diet: Brazilian Cardinals feed on seeds, insects and fruit. Their strong beaks help them to crack open seeds. Insects are preferred during mating season.

Reproduction: Breeding before they reach a full year, Brazilian Cardinals are monogamous birds. The male builds a nest of sticks, pine needles and twigs.  The female lays 2 to 5 eggs. After an incubation period of 11 to 15 days the eggs hatch. The parents feed their young for 2 to 3 weeks.

Lifespan: Brazilian Cardinals can live up to 20 years.
