| The red carnation placed over the violin strings speaks of peace, serenity and love. Why should this be? To understand why for some people this image should evoke such qualities, we must turn to the nature of symbolism. Symbols are powerful emotion evokers. They can transport us to a different place and time. The carnation in this image happens to be red. For many societies, the colour red represents love and happiness. This is not true of all cultures, however. Look at the image again. Would you feel any different if the carnation was white or a yellow? The violin, the instrument over which the carnation is placed happens to be a beautifully shaped instrument. The delicate curves of the violin might resemble the female body form. So now you have a symbol of love placed over a human female form. What do you think? How has your understanding of this image changed? |
